about

This is music born in the forest, filled with the light of the sun coming through the leaves and freshness of a forest lake. It is free, like breath.
The “Like Breath” album is the result of the lockdown.
In mid-March, like so many other people across the world, I had to give up moving around and stay at home. At first it was not so bad, but three months on I realised that unless I went to the forest something really bad would happen to me.
So, I started going to the forest two or three times a week to spend ten or twelve hours at a time just walking, while days at home between trips seemed lost from life.
Half a year later the carillon in Peter and Paul fortress became accessible again. I had been missing this instrument a great deal and decided to try and play music I’d heard in my head during my walks.
Thus was the album recorded on the very first day when, after several long months in the forest, I finally had access to the carillon.
Olesya Rostovskaya

The carillon in Peter and Paul fortress is the third instrument constructed on the same historical site. The first one was brought from Holland by, Elizaveta Petrovna. The current instrument was built as part of the project initiated by Jo Haazen, a renowned carillonist and a most outstanding figure in modern carillon culture. This latest instrument, built by Petit & Fritzen, consists of 51 beautifully tuned bells of ‘magic’ timbre with a melodious resonance and a key-board that is incredibly sensitive to the performer’s touch.
Olesya Rostovskaya is a leading Russian carillonist, holder of the first carillon diploma in Russia (St Petersburg State University) and composer.
“Like Breath” is Rostovskaya’s 9th solo album and the first to contain only carillon improvisations.
