“The Tsar and Great Prince of Moscow arrived incognito on the morning of August 8th last”.

While travelling in the Netherlands last years of the 17th century, Tsar Peter I was enchanted by the sound of the carillon. When he returned to Russia he brought several instruments with him and so began the Russian tradition of the carillon.
No historical account is known which would provide us with a detailed description of music that Tsar Peter would have heard from the bell-tower of Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg where the first Russian carillon was mounted. According to the fashion of the time it would have included well-known melodies, ecclesiastical music, military music (which Peter particularly encouraged in every possible way), music played during court assemblées and popular “folk” music.
The author of this historical-artistic reconstruction is Olesya Rostovskaya, composer and carillonist. She is the holder of the first degree ever awarded in the Russian carillon (by St. Petersburg State University) and a graduate of the Jef Denyn Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium.

Во время своих путешествий по Фламандским землям в конце XVII века Пётр I был очарован звуками карильонов. Он привёз в Россию несколько инструментов, и это дало начало русской карильонной культуре. В данный момент нам неизвестны подробные указания в источниках - какие именно произведения Пётр I слышал с колокольни Петропавловского собора, в которой был установлен первый русский карильон. В традициях того времени это должны были быть известные мелодии, церковная музыка, военная музыка (которую всячески поощрял Пётр), музыка петровских ассамблей и музыка, известная широкой публике (фольклор).
Автор этой историко-художественной реконструкции - композитор, карильонист Олеся Ростовская, обладатель первого в мире русского карильонного диплома (СПбГУ) и выпускница Королевской школы карильона им. Жефа Денейна в Мехелене (Бельгия).
